Inside the CDC’s pandemic missteps — and how they tarnished the agency’s reputation
Recently, NBC News published a story concerning how the CDC’s communication failures during COVID tarnished the agency. The story indicated that frustrations still run high at the CDC, but staffers remain hopeful that the agency will regain its credibility with the public.
During the pandemic, NGS Principal, Dr. Oliver, served as an Emergency Management Subject Matter Expert to the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on COVID-19 response best practices. In this role, Dr. Oliver was part of a team that conducted an Interim Action Review of NIH’s COVID-19 response. As part of this review, the team conducted interviews across the federal and leading university emergency management and public health communities to collect data needed to establish a best practices baseline. As a result of this review, it was quite clear that there was broad frustration with CDC’s crisis/public communications failures among those leading the nation’s response to the pandemic.
