In NYC’s Basement Apartments, Deadly Flood Risks Remain
The NYC basement issue is a fascinating case study in natural hazard diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As with most DEI issues, there are few easy or quick solutions to the NYC basement issue.
Although natural hazard disasters affect everyone, the NYC basement issue shines a spotlight on longstanding disparities and inequities experienced by people from racial and ethnic minority groups, people with low incomes, and other communities with less power and access to resources. The attached article does a good job exploring the issue and provides an update on what has and hasn’t happened in addressing the issue since the deadly flooding cause by Hurricane Ida in 2021.
